A Melamed in a Heyder
The melamed's wife was bad tempered, but she took great care to keep the room well heated for the children's sake.She ignored her husband's claim that the expense would lead them to starvation.

Basia Banner (1917-1942) and her mother Nechama (1888-1942) on Shabbat morning, time to relax and read. The community kept a large library of books in Yiddish and Hebrew, and Basia and her mother were avid readers.

In the family, a Folk Song
The mother in the Yiddish folk song sings to her baby and tell him that he'll grow to study the Torah and the kid will trade in raisins and almonds.

Shoshana says Kaddish for her mother, who looks down on her. Aunt Sarah told Shoshana her prayers would gain her mother a golden seat in paradise. By Rabbi Drimmer's permission, she attended synagogue for a year.
Purim Celebration
Dressing up for Purim consisted mainly just masks, due to poverty.
Preparing for Passover
The children are helping with Passover preparations and bringing cutlery and other items for ritual washing.
The Hebrew School Tarbut
The children studied Hebrew and about Eretz Israel. On the wall are Herzl and the Keren Kayemet collection box. The truants are playing outside.
